To open a Google Sheet on a phone or tablet, install the Google Sheets app from your device's app store, sign in with the Google account that holds the file, and tap the file's name. Tap Menu at the top left to switch between Recent, Shared with me, Starred and Offline files. The app also opens .xlsx files. A 12-tab ProfitDrawer bookkeeping spreadsheet saved in your Google Drive opens this way, though Google notes large files may not open on every device.
Steps:
- Install the Google Sheets app from your device's app store; it appears on your home screen.
- Open it and sign in to the Google account where the file is saved.
- Tap the file's name to open it.
- To find a file, tap Menu at the top left and choose Recent, Shared with me, Starred or Offline.
Editing on a small screen:
- Changes save automatically while you are online. In Sheets, tap outside the cell you are typing in to save it.
- Offline changes save to the device and sync to Drive when you reconnect.
File types: depending on the device, the app opens XLS and XLSX files, and on some devices also XLSM, CSV, ODS and TSV.
Big files: Google says a file that opens in a desktop web browser might not open on mobile, depending on the device's memory and resources. If that happens, use a computer or a web browser.
For first-time setup of a downloaded .xlsx file, such as importing it into Google Sheets, a computer is easier; after that the file opens on your phone from Drive.
