To open an Excel file in Google Sheets, open a spreadsheet in Sheets, click File > Import, select the .xlsx file, choose an import option such as Create new spreadsheet, then click Import. Sheets accepts .xls, .xlsx, .xlsm and .csv files, among others, as long as they are not password protected. ProfitDrawer's spreadsheets arrive as 1 .xlsx file plus 2 setup PDFs, and the included setup PDF walks through this same File > Import route.
Steps (computer):
- Open Google Sheets and open or create a spreadsheet.
- Click File > Import, then upload your Excel file.
- Pick an import option: Create new spreadsheet, Insert new sheets, Replace spreadsheet, Replace current sheet, Append rows to current sheet, or Replace data starting at selected cell. Not every file type offers all six.
- Click Import.
Another route: upload the file to Google Drive and double-click it. It opens in Google Sheets. To turn it into a Google Sheets file, click File > Save as Google Sheets; the original Excel file stays unchanged.
Things that do not carry over: Google lists macros as unsupported in Sheets (Apps Script is the alternative), and linked spreadsheets do not work. Google also notes that protected cells and worksheets become viewable and editable after conversion, so re-add protection if you rely on it.
