To sort data by date in Google Sheets, select the range with every column of your rows, click Data > Sort range > Advanced range sorting options, tick Data has header row if the first row holds titles, pick the date column, choose A to Z to put the earliest dates first or Z to A for newest first, and click Sort. A ProfitDrawer bookkeeping spreadsheet totals each month with SUMIFS date tests across up to 1,000 income rows, so its totals stay the same in any row order.
Sort a range (computer):
- Highlight the cells to sort. Include every column of the rows, not only the date column, so each date stays with its amount and description.
- If there is a header row, freeze that row first.
- Click Data > Sort range > Advanced range sorting options.
- Tick Data has header row if your columns have titles.
- Choose the date column and an order: A to Z puts the earliest date first, Z to A the latest.
- To break ties, click Add another sort column, for example Client.
- Click Sort.
Sort a whole sheet: right-click the column letter at the top and click Sort sheet A to Z or Sort sheet Z to A. This moves every row on the tab, so use a range sort when the sheet has a title block or totals above the data.
Want the order only for yourself? A filter view (Data > Create filter view) lets you sort without changing what other editors see.
If a sort puts dates in an odd order, some cells may hold text that looks like a date rather than a real date value; retype them or apply a date format to check.
