To add up a column in Google Sheets, click an empty cell below the numbers and type =SUM(B2:B100), using your own column letter and rows, then press Enter. For a quick check without a formula, highlight the cells and read Sum: total in the bottom right of the window. ProfitDrawer's bookkeeping spreadsheets already total every column for you, using SUMIFS to add amounts by month and category.
With a formula (computer):
- Click the cell where you want the total.
- Type an equal sign, then the function:
=SUM(B2:B100). - Press Enter.
SUM accepts single cells, ranges or numbers, for example =SUM(B2:B100), =SUM(1,2,3,4,5) or =SUM(1,2,A2:A50).
Without a formula (Google's See the sum and average help page):
- Highlight the cells you want to add.
- Look in the bottom right for Sum: total.
- Click Sum to switch to Average, Minimum, Maximum, Count or Count numbers.
Google says this quick total does not work for some numbers or currency formats, and it is not saved in the sheet.
Totals with a condition: to add only one category, such as Supplies, use SUMIF instead of SUM.
Tip: include extra empty rows in the range (for example B2:B1000) so new entries are counted automatically.
