Apply directly with the IRS using its online EIN tool on irs.gov. It is free: the IRS says you never have to pay a fee for an EIN, and if your application is approved the number is issued immediately online. The session expires after 15 minutes of inactivity, so have your details ready. ProfitDrawer's startup guides add a warning: avoid websites that charge to get an EIN for you.
Who generally needs an EIN (per the IRS): businesses that hire employees, operate as a partnership or corporation, pay certain excise taxes, or change structure or ownership, plus some trusts, estates and retirement plans.
