# How do I use SUMIFS with a date range?

To total amounts between two dates, test the date column twice in SUMIFS: =SUMIFS(D2:D500, A2:A500, ">="&DATE(2026,1,1), A2:A500, "<="&DATE(2026,1,31)) adds column D for January 2026, and a row counts only when every condition matches. ProfitDrawer's bookkeeping spreadsheets build each monthly total the same way, with ">=" and "<=" tests against the month's first and last day plus a Paid? equals Yes test for income (expense totals test Business? equals Yes).

**Syntax:** `SUMIFS(sum_range, criteria_range1, criterion1, [criteria_range2, criterion2, ...])`

**Example layout:** A = date, C = category, D = amount.

| Goal | Formula |
|---|---|
| January 2026 total | `=SUMIFS(D2:D500, A2:A500, ">="&DATE(2026,1,1), A2:A500, "<="&DATE(2026,1,31))` |
| Same, Supplies only | add `, C2:C500, "Supplies"` before the closing bracket |
| Dates typed in F1 and G1 | `=SUMIFS(D2:D500, A2:A500, ">="&F1, A2:A500, "<="&G1)` |

**How it works:**

- The comparison sign goes in quotation marks and is joined to the date with `&`. Google's criteria rules accept `=`, `>`, `>=`, `<` and `<=`.
- `DATE(year, month, day)` builds a real date; its inputs must be numbers or it returns #VALUE!.
- A row is added only when it meets all criteria.
- sum_range and every criteria range must be the same size, so with one date column, point sum_range at one amount column.

**Tip:** put the start and end dates in cells (as in the third row) so you can change the period without editing the formula. For a month end, `EOMONTH(start, 0)` gives the last day.

ProfitDrawer workbooks use this pattern on a hidden Calc tab for every month of the financial year.
