# How do I register a business name (DBA)?

You register a DBA (doing business as) name with your state, county or city, depending on where your business is located; the SBA says most states require it if you use one. File the form with the right office, pay the fee and keep the certificate. A DBA gives no legal protection on its own and does not create an LLC. ProfitDrawer's startup guides note the SBA puts total business registration costs under $300, with fees that vary by state.

**Steps:**

1. **Decide if you need one.** If you work under your own legal name, you usually do not. If your sign, website or shop uses a different name, most states require a DBA. An LLC trading under a name other than its registered name may need one too.
2. **Find the right office.** Depending on your state, that is the secretary of state, a county clerk or the city. Your secretary of state's website is the place to start.
3. **Search the name** in your state's business records so you do not pick one already in use.
4. **File and pay** the registration form and fee. Fees and renewal rules vary by place.
5. **Use it.** Banks often ask for your DBA registration before they open an account in that name, and the name goes on your invoices and listings.

A DBA is only a name. You are still a sole proprietor (personally liable) unless you form an LLC or corporation, and any business license is separate. General information, not legal advice.
